The Bounce

Ray McCormack explains how to use “The Bounce,” a floor-sweeping technique that allows you to use a hosestream to clear debris out of your immediate area before advancing the hoseline toward a fire area.

Another great fire video from Fireengeering.com training minutes and Ray McCormack. I like this video especially when you get to keep building on your hoseline technique. Things that I like in this video is the nozzle man is holding the nozzle out in front of him vs using the pistol grip. This gives him greater nozzle mobility and the ability to bend the line around corners (Ray McCormack) did another video on that technique. The other part is I have practiced the sweeping the floor method (another Ray McCormak Video) many times, but never heard of the bounce. It makes complete sense thought that you will hit the floor in front of you with high pressure to push out the debris, but also letting your backup firefighter know it is time to move forward. Of course this is not for every fire or situation but is something to think about and put in my tool box.

What other techniques do you use?

  2. Hi,
In a European point of view, this video show what our grand father were doing… Today we know far more better techniques that seems to be completly unknow in the USA. Saying holding the nozzle by the hose rather than the pistol give better mobility is a non-sense for us, as we LEARN how to use a nozzle. Each time we see a FF holding a nozzle like that, each time this is because he didn’t know how to use a pistol grip. So of course, he believe the pistol grip is bad, and try to find aother way. Same with solide bore vs fog. I’ve never seem one US FF knowing how to use a fog pattern correctly, so you believe it’s bad and you use solid bore. The difference is that we train people with solide bore AND fog pattern, and they see that the fog is far more better.

      Hello Lamballais,

Would you mind sending us videos of the above mentioned techniques? The goal of this website continues to be the merging of many different training methodologies. We are always in search of different techniques that add to our toolbox of knowledge. Thanks for your response.
